Purdue University’s Parking and Transportation Study Assessment

“The campus is changing and marketplace innovation is transforming how people transport themselves. Understanding the needs of staff, faculty, students and visitors as they arrive on campus or move about during their day is vital as we develop this plan.”

Ben Dispennett, director of Parking and Transportation Services | Purdue University

The Purdue Parking and Transportation Service collected input on campus parking, mobility, and bus services through a survey in the fall of 2019. The survey and planning efforts support the West Lafayette Campus Master Plan and covers topics such as parking, bicycling, bus transit, etc.

Rich & Associates Planning Department in conjunction with Sam Schwartz assessed the feedback from Purdue’s parking survey and provided the University with alternative scenarios to achieve their parking needs. The physical and financial impacts from the alternatives considered a range of solutions from building additional parking to meet the needs for a growing student population to improved bus service intended to reduce the need for new parking. Other issues such as re-construction of existing parking near the end of its service life and improvements to the parking experience for students, staff and visitors for a more efficient use of the parking supply was also the focus of the analysis.
