In 2019 we broke news of an expansion of the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, a six-story, 162,800-square-foot facility that opened its doors in Grand Rapids, Michigan in September of 2017. In 2019 a long-term ground lease was signed to allow for the continued development of the Grand Rapids Research Center site. This lease includes construction of a new Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building (MIB) and a 600-space parking structure.
Over the last year tremendous progress has been made on the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building as well as the parking structure. In August of 2020 a major milestone was achieved at the Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building with the hoisting of the final steel beam atop the new seven-story building! Today, the parking structure is near complete and is still on track for a February 2021 completion date!
Rich & Associates is providing parking consulting, architectural and structural engineering design services for the parking structure in collaboration with SmithGroup, architects for the MIB.
In June 2020 we released an article on the Sugar Hill Mixed-Use Development in Midtown Detroit which was preparing for groundbreaking.
Rich & Associates has been working closely with the development team on the design and engineering of a multi-level parking garage being constructed along with the apartment building and ground level retail space. The development team, led by Develop Detroit, includes local architects McIntosh Poris Associates and international architects Perkins & Will.
Located at the corner of John R. and Garfield Streets, the Sugar Hill Mixed-Use Development includes a 68-unit apartment building, 11,800 total square feet of ground level retail space, and a 164-space multi-level parking garage. Construction is expected to take 18 months to complete and is on track for a September 2021 completion date.
The garage features four levels of parking and 3,300 square feet of ground level retail space. The façade is a combination of precast concrete, cable rails and decorative fabric mesh panels and officially broke ground this past summer!
